5.1 Human Factors in Aviation
- Understand the SHELL model
In aviation, the SHELL model is a conceptual model of human factors that helps to clarify the location and cause of human error within an aviation environment. Places emphasis on the human being and human interfaces with other components of the aviation system.
5.2 Physiology - Vision
- Identify visual illusions during UAS operations and how to overcome them:
- Autokinesis (visual perception in which a stationary, small point of light in an otherwise dark or featureless environment appears to move.)
- Disorientation
- Spatial Disorientation - Describe the effects of sun-blindness and how to overcome it
- Describe correct visual scanning techniques
5.3 Physiology - Medications and Psychoactive Substances
- Know the prohibition of use of psychoactive substances during UAS operations
- Describe the effects of intoxication during UAS operations
- Describe the effects of medications during UAS operations
5.4 Psychology - Fatigue
- Identify the causes of fatigue
- Describe the effects of fatigue on UAS operations
- Describe fatigue management techniques
5.5 Psychology - Stress
- Identify the causes of stress
- Describe the effects of stress on UAS operations
- Describe stress management techniques
Wear Sunglasses and a Brimmed Hat A wide brimmed hat or cap will block about half of UV rays. A brimmed hat or cap can also limit UV rays that hit the eyes from above or around glasses. Eyewear that absorbs UV rays gives you the most protection.
LEARN TO SCAN PROPERLY! Divide the sky into blocks, each spanning 10-15 degrees of the horizon, and 10 degrees above and below it. Scan from left to right, focusing on a point in the center of each block. Focusing allows the eye to detect a conflict within the foveal field.
Visual Scanning Technique | Effective scanning is accomplished by a series of short, regularly-spaced eye movements that bring successive areas of the sky into the central visual field. Each movement should not exceed 10°, and each area should be observed for at least one second to enable detection.
